Hairspray the Musical Dances into Milton Keynes Theatre

Milton Keynes Theatre is set to come alive this week with the infectious energy of "Hairspray the Musical,".

The Point was treated to pure joy last night when they attended Milton Keynes Theatre to see Hairspray.

Hairspray was colourful, vibrant, and funny, but at its heart, it told the important and moving story of the fight to end segregation in the U.S.

The show begins with Tracy Turnblad and her friend Penny, like any teenage girls, rushing home to watch their favourite music and dance show, The Corny Collins Show. Tracy was in love with one of the dancers and high school heartthrob, Link Larkin. Tracy loved to dance and dreamed of dancing on the show and becoming a star.

Tracy was teased because of her size and didn’t understand why she and a young black girl, Little Inez, couldn’t dance on the show just because of the way they looked. Finally, she got her chance to be on the show and vowed to bring about racial integration. She couldn’t understand why everyone just couldn’t dance together.

This moving story saw the return of Katie Brace as Tracy, who lived and breathed the character and won the hearts of the audience. The powerhouse voice of Michelle Ndegwa, portraying Motormouth Maybelle, left us inspired and almost in tears. But the highlight of the night was Tracy’s mum and dad, Edna and Wilbur, played by Neil Hurst and Dermot Canavan. Their duet, “You’re Timeless to Me,” was full of fun and laughter. They played off every word, giving giggles to themselves as well as the audience. We could have watched them singing and performing together for hours. There was no weak link in the cast; everyone was fabulous, and the music and dancing were on point throughout.

By the end of the night, Tracy had bagged her man, Link, and the TV dance show was integrated.

"Hairspray" is a must-see for anyone looking for a night of entertainment with a powerful message. The show is at MK Theatre until 7th September, so don’t miss out on this incredible experience!
